The Founding of Fort Laramie

In 1834, I stood on Wyoming’s windswept plains. My hands were rough from years of trapping and trading. I helped establish Fort Laramie—a rugged outpost that became a lifeline for pioneers. Alongside my partner William Sublette, I blazed the Oregon Trail. We guided weary travelers through uncharted lands using my deep knowledge of rivers and mountains.

Our journey was not without challenges. I built a thriving fur trading empire across the West. This empire traded beaver pelts, which played a vital role in fueling America's growth. However, I faced brutal winters and tense negotiations with Native tribes. Yet that grit transformed wilderness into a pathway for a nation.

Building Community Trust

Years passed, and I often reflect on those trails. My boots were caked with Wyoming mud, and I remember how every hard-won mile built trust and trade. As settlements scattered across the land, we worked together to forge a thriving frontier.

The endurance I showed during those tough times remains my greatest legacy. It stands as a testament to the power of skill, courage, and determination. Today, organizations like Wyoming Patriots carry that spirit forward. They teach skills like navigation and survival to strengthen our community, just as we did back then.
